Wow! So yeah, I just got back yesterday from this con, my first con by the way. I have to say that it was a lot more interesting than I thought it'd be. It was also their 20th anniversary apparently, but I'm not sure what all of a difference that made. They seemed to have some balloons, but that was about it
Anyhow, I was absolutely amazed by the event, especially when I realized that this anime convention didn't simply consist of people wearing costumes from animes. Which...was what I did, I went as Spike Spiegel and there were some other people dressed as the same, but not many at all, a lot of people didn't even know who I was....however, they did have spider-man, batman, catwoman, foamy the squirrel, Duffman, Mario, Wreck it Ralph, Samus, Metal Sonic, Waldo, Lego man, a plastic soldier, storm troopers, Vader in a samurai outfit, gumbi, the stig (us and uk versions), Sephiroth, Link, Pikachu, Power Rangers, Deadpool, Hook, The Ghostbusters, Snake, Darth Maul, Katara, Captain Kirk, Nightcrawler, Bane, Optimus Prime, Chel, Mega-Man, as well as a group of people that were literally carrying something the size of a vending machine....no idea what that was. There were also plenty of people in costumes I didn't recognize either.
With ALL of those people together, grouped together in large lines, squished and packed in to get autographs, wait in lines in the bright sun in giant plastic armor, and generally living together for the time that they were at the otakon I saw absolutely nobody getting angry at each other or acting like jerks to each other. I'm sure not everyone understood all the ins and outs of each character being portrayed or how to interact with them, but everyone got along, they were patient, kind, helpful, encouraging, and understanding about everything. It was just such a refreshing and brilliant experience. Being able to turn around and get excited because of someone else's love for something you love is something you just need to experience yourself. I'd advise anyone that has the time and money to go to this con or another populated con like it for themselves. Even if you don't know much about the subject of the particular con (like anime), there seems to be at least something for you
